3/4/2023 0 Comments Tour of Northern SerbiaBrittany and I really wanted to take a day to do a tour of Serbia and get to know where we are more, so we signed up for a walking tour trip through Northern Serbia. We were picked up at 9:30 by the tour guide, the group in total for the day 9 people, there were three older couples and one young guy solo from the UK. We were the last ones picked up, so after we got right on the road and headed to the first location. We drove an hour to the north to the first location, the rest all close by. Our tour guide, Jelica, was great and talked during the drive on the history of Serbia. I have to be honest, I did doze off a few times haha. She had such a calm voice and I was sleepy lol. It only took about 15 minutes to get to the main highways, where the rest of the drive views were all fields! It was beautiful! Around 10:30 we made it to the Fruska Gora Monastery. The monastery originally held 91 monks, all male, and today only has 6. The grounds were beautiful, and are kept nice by the monks and local volunteers. Walking through the field to the church you could see tons of sheep and lambs grazing. Jelica took us to the one spot outside the church where there was a natural water spring she had us drink out of. It was very awkward to reach down to, photo in the gallery lol. Then we went to the church grounds, and oh man, it was the most beautiful and old church I have ever seen! You can’t take photos inside, but there were murals over all of the walls, with some dating back to the 15th Century. Like what?! The way it has all been preserved was astonishing. After some gawking, we headed back to the van for our next spot. The second location was the town of Sremski Karlovci. The city center walking path takes about 2 minutes to get to the other side haha. But the architecture of the old churches there were beautiful! There was a fountain with four lion heads with drinkable water. Legend says if you are single you pick a side to drink out of, and the next time you return you won’t be alone! It also is important which side you pick because the opposite side is what part of the world your partner will be from. Just my luck, the fountain was dried up for the winter lol, so no magic dating water for me. This town is one of the major areas/regions for the production of wine in Serbia. We went to a wine shop and had a wine tasting. It was my first wine tasting, we got to try one red and one white, then two traditional Serbian style wines called Bermont (I think that’s how it spelled). It was like a dessert wine, very sweet. I bought two bottles, one white wine with hints of green apple and one of the white Bermonts. Next we headed towards Novi Sad (the second major city in Serbia), and stopped at the Petrovaradin Fortress before crossing the bridge into the city. To get to the top of the fortress was a bit of a hike up many steps, but the panorama view of the city was beautiful! We stopped at the clock, where it was originally a ‘naval’ clock so the big had is actually the hour and the small hand minutes, because for sailors the hour was more important than the minutes. Our tour guide seemed popular to the locals here, because a guy came over and gave us special access to the inside of the clock tower which was soo cool getting to climb inside to see the old mechanisms. Then we took some cute pics at the edge looking over to Novi Sad. After, we headed over to our final destination, the Novi Sad city center.
